USS Dolphin, circa 1900

The Gunship USS Dolphin lies moored here in Boston (MA) harbor. The Dolphin had an unusual name for a US warship, and was the precursor to the cruiser. Later, battleships were named for states and cruisers were named for American cities. © Fredrik D. Bodin
