Great White Fleet,circa 1900
President Theodore Roosevelt was determined to make the US a world naval power, and he used the Great White Fleet of battleships and cruisers to do it. In this photograph, the fleet maneuvers off Rockport (MA). At one time, Rockport was to be the headquarters of the North Atlantic Fleet, and the construction of a breakwater commenced to enclose Sandy Bay. Most of it is still in place. © Fredrik D. Bodin
