Granite Schooner Norton, circa 1890
Lane's Cove, on the north side of Gloucester Island, was where granite was shipped out from the area's many quarries. Wagons carried wagons loaded with granite to the side of the ship. Cranes, run by a steam "donkey," hoisted the granite aboard. Cape Ann granite had a national reputation, and has been used to construct hundreds of buildings and monuments. © Fredrik D. Bodin
